Abstract

We sought to estimate sex by means of linear measurements of 200 computed tomographies (CT) scans of skulls and jaws of the Osteological and Tomographic Biobank of the Piracicaba Dentistry School. Seven linear measurements were performed: posterior wall of the Turkish saddle to anterior nasal spine; posterior wall of the Turkish saddle to the right zygium; posterior wall of the Turkish saddle to the left zygium; right zygium to left zygium; right infra-orbital foramen to left infra-orbital foramen; left infra-orbital foramen to the anterior nasal spine and right infra-orbital foramen to the anterior nasal spine using the OnDemand3D™ software. For calibration, the ICC statistical test (intraclass correlation coefficient) was used, according to Szklo and Nieto (2000)18 and the data analysis used the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, t test, Pearson test and logistic regression by Stepwise-Forward (Wald) method and Shapiro-Wilke and Levene test to analyze the distribution and equality of variances of the variables, respectively.        The results found that the measurements showed dimorphism, except for the right infra-orbital foramen to the left infra-orbital foramen. It was possible to create a logistic regression model [Logit Almeida = 36,560 + (- 0.088 * PPST-ENA) + (- 0.233 * ZD-ZE) + 0.140 * E-FIO D + WIRE (- 0.194 * FIOE-ENA)], that resulted in 79.1% sensitivity, 84.4% specificity and 82.0% accuracy. It was concluded that the logistic regression model obtained allows the estimation of sex in CTs of Brazilians, and can be used as auxiliary method in the process of human identification.
