Knowledge of Dentistry students at a university in Southern Brazil regarding the conduct and reception of women victims of domestic violence: A cross-sectional study

Abstract

          Domestic violence against women is a global issue, commonly associated with injuries to the head and neck region, which positions dentists as the first professionals likely to identify such abuse. However, academic training rarely prepares these professionals to detect, manage, and support the victims, highlighting the need for better qualification in this area. The aim of this study was to analyze the level of knowledge among Dentistry students regarding procedures and support in cases of domestic violence against women. As for materials and methods, this is a descriptive cross-sectional study that evaluated 114 Dentistry students in Pelotas/RS on this issue, through a questionnaire. A total of 92 responses were obtained, the majority from women aged between 21 and 29 years. Only 23.9% of the students had received any training or felt capable of identifying cases, with most not knowing how to proceed. It is concluded that there is a need for improved university-level training for future professionals to ensure better support and appropriate action when dealing with victims.
