Abstract

Human identification is a standardized procedure used to identify individuals based on their unique characteristics, and is essential in situations such as mass disasters. After the collapse of Vale S.A.’s B-1 dam in Brumadinho (January 25, 2019), which resulted in 272 deaths, it was necessary to fully apply this protocol. Given the limited knowledge about the identification spaces and procedures, this descriptive study details the structure of the Governador Valadares Medical-Legal Post (MLP-GV) and the Doctor André Roquette Medic-Legal Institute (AR-MLI) in Belo Horizonte, as well as the adaptations made to the protocol after the disaster, using a flowchart. This study included visiting the MLP-GV in person and an online meeting with the forensic odontologist at the AR-MLI in BH, with photographic records and data collection regarding the spaces and the workflow. As a result, six main areas were identified in each unit, along with the prioritization of papiloscopy as the initial identification method. Therefore, it is clear that the protocols can be adjusted according to the urgency of the situation.
