Abstract

Violence against women includes any act or conduct based on gender that causes harm, including physical, sexual, or psychological suffering, or even death. TThe head and neck region is frequently affected, making dental surgeons key in identifying and treating victims. Gender violence, besides being a socio-political problem, should also be addressed by the scientific community. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted in Parnaíba, Piauí, with private-sector dentists. A questionnaire was used to assess their knowledge of ethical-legal protocols when treating female victims of violence. The study revealed that the topic is rarely addressed both during undergraduate studies and in post-graduate clinical practice, and that many professionals do not know how to identify signs of violence or how to proceed legally. Although dental surgeons frequently come into contact with patients who may be victims of domestic violence, most do not feel prepared to diagnose or report such cases. Brazilian legislation requires mandatory reporting of violence against women, but professionals fear reprisals, even though reporting is confidential and does not constitute a formal accusation. The study concludes that most dental surgeons do not have adequate knowledge about the protocols for care and importance of reporting, which may contribute to the continuation of violence. The research highlights the need for a more humane and integrated approach by dentists in addressing this issue.
