Abstract

Given the growing number of lawsuits against dentists aimed at damage repair, the debate surrounding the difference between dental error and iatrogenesis becomes relevant. In the former, the professional acts with fault, either through incompetence, recklessness, or negligence. The latter represents an adverse outcome that does not derive from poor dental practice. Understanding these concepts is essential for the dentist to defend themselves in civil actions. However, despite the relevance of the topic, the literature shows that many professionals mistakenly use these terms, often treating them as synonyms. This study aimed to assess knowledge on the topic among dentists in Curitiba (PR). To this end, a quantitative study was conducted using an online questionnaire on the Forms platform, with a total of 107 professionals of different ages, fields, and years of experience. The results obtained showed that the term iatrogenesis is understood and used incorrectly. Most believe that the term is synonymous with dental error or that it derives from it. Furthermore, a large part of the study participants incorrectly associated the iatrogenic outcome with professional fault. These data clearly show a knowledge gap regarding the concepts encompassing dentists' civil liability among professionals working in Curitiba. Thus, to promote a safer clinical practice, it is important to find ways to broaden professionals' understanding of these concepts and their legal applications.
