Abstract

Introduction: Legal dentistry allows human identification by comparing ante-mortem dental documentation with post-mortem information, and panoramic radiographs are great allies in this process. Objectives: To describe the contribution of radiographs to human identification, through a case report, in addition to highlighting the importance of archiving imaging exams by professionals and/or service. Methodology: This is a case report of a charred body, which was submitted to technical inspection, in 2020, at Oficial Police Institute of Northeast of Brazil. The inclusion criteria  for  the  selection  of  the  case  were  the  existence  of  skull  and  teeth  in conditions that could be examined and identified by the dental arches, in addition to the existence of ante-mortem dental documentation for comparison, which included the presence of radiographs. Results: The body had a preserved skull, despite the carbonization. The existence of panoramic radiographs before and after the individual's death allowed the comparison of coincident points and explainable divergences, allowing the positive identification of the case. Conclusion: At the end of the expert examination, the case was elucidated and the importance of correctly filling out and filing the dental documentation was also proven, as it can be essential for human identification case by Forensic Odontology.
