Abstract

In forensic practice, facial recognition has been discussed and subjected to many questions in recent years. This fact is due to technological advances and consequent increase in the demand for imaging examinations by the police and forensic agencies. In the international context, the Facial Identification Scientific Working Group (FISWG) coordinates a constant debate on the subject and points to the limitations and application of the techniques. The aim of this review is to interpret and synthesize the content of the documents made available by the FISWG, introducing the theme to those who are starting in the practice of facial recognition. The documents comprise a full construction of knowledge that begins in the contextualization of the technique, presentation of a code of ethics, standardization of nomenclature and anatomical areas of interest, characteristics of training, communication and indication of factors that influence the process, such as age and image distortions. Being the area of interest of Legal Dentistry, professionals of this specialty can and should be prepared to practice expertise of this nature.
