Most injuries affect the head and neck area, positioning the Dentist in a strategic role in identifying these cases. The aim of this study was to assess and compare the knowledge and attitudes of Dentists working in public and private services regarding cases of Child Abuse in the municipality of Suzano-SP. Ninety professionals participated in the study, both male and female, with 45 from the Public Health Network (PHN) and 45 from Private Services (PS). They were invited in person to answer a semi-structured questionnaire covering topics related to professional identification, knowledge about the subject, conduct when handling cases, and their responsibility in reporting. After data collection, the results were analyzed and compared using Chi-square and Mann-Whitney tests (α=5%). The professionals had an average age of 37.72 ± 12.64 years, with women being the majority in both groups (p<0.05). The PS group reported receiving information about the topic during their undergraduate studies (p<0.001), mainly in Pediatric Dentistry (75.6%) and Forensic Dentistry (53.3%) courses (p≤0.001), with theoretical classes (57.8%) being the most used teaching method (p<0.001). Professionals in the PHN group demonstrated greater knowledge and attitude compared to the PS group (p<0.001). Therefore, it can be concluded that PHN professionals showed better knowledge and attitude, and there is a need for educational strategies to increase awareness, leading to improvements in the identification and reporting of cases.

2024-12-31T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://portalabol.com.br/rbol/index.php/RBOL/article/view/586 DIFERENÇA ENTRE ERRO ODONTOLÓGICO E IATROGENIA: UM LEVANTAMENTO SOBRE A PERCEPÇÃO DE CIRURGIÕES-DENTISTAS DA CIDADE DE CURITIBA, PARANÁ 2024-10-30T14:36:02-03:00 Ana Carolina Carneiro Santos Lirani anacarolinalirani@gmail.com Válery Miranda Strafite de Oliveira valerymiranda019@gmail.com Paulo Sérgio Batista psbatista1502@gmail.com
Given the growing number of lawsuits against dentists aimed at damage repair, the debate surrounding the difference between dental error and iatrogenesis becomes relevant. In the former, the professional acts with fault, either through incompetence, recklessness, or negligence. The latter represents an adverse outcome that does not derive from poor dental practice. Understanding these concepts is essential for the dentist to defend themselves in civil actions. However, despite the relevance of the topic, the literature shows that many professionals mistakenly use these terms, often treating them as synonyms. This study aimed to assess knowledge on the topic among dentists in Curitiba (PR). To this end, a quantitative study was conducted using an online questionnaire on the Forms platform, with a total of 107 professionals of different ages, fields, and years of experience. The results obtained showed that the term iatrogenesis is understood and used incorrectly. Most believe that the term is synonymous with dental error or that it derives from it. Furthermore, a large part of the study participants incorrectly associated the iatrogenic outcome with professional fault. These data clearly show a knowledge gap regarding the concepts encompassing dentists' civil liability among professionals working in Curitiba. Thus, to promote a safer clinical practice, it is important to find ways to broaden professionals' understanding of these concepts and their legal applications.
2024-12-31T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 https://portalabol.com.br/rbol/index.php/RBOL/article/view/588 MORDIDAS CRIMINOSAS NO BRASIL: ANÁLISE DE REPORTAGENS DIVULGADAS ANTES, DURANTE E APÓS A PANDEMIA DO COVID-19 2024-11-19T23:06:55-03:00 Kaylane Teles de Souza kaylaneodonto@gmail.com Débora Silva Amorim Freitas debora.amorim.freitas@outlook.com Louise da Fonseca Oliveira louisefonseca05@gmail.com Larissa Lima Silva Cunha llarissa447@gmail.com Isabelle Silva Cunha Oliveira bellesilvacunha@gmail.com Jeidson Antônio Morais Marques marques_jam@hotmail.com
Introduction: The bite mark is defined as a mark made by the teeth that can be found on the skin, objects and food, which is capable of becoming evidence of great legal importance in forensic cases. This was a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Initially, students were presented with the proposal to use comic strips (CS) to approach the Code of Dental Ethics (CDE). In groups, students were guided on how to create stories that should portray one of the CDE's chapters. Afterwards, the CS produced were shared and the moment allowed the discussion of the different CDE topics among the class, then the questionnaires were applied. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed descriptively. The survey response rate was 78.26% and the sample comprised 36 students, 69.4% (n=25) female, with an average age of 24.2 years, studying in the 4th to 8th semesters of the course. Most participants (86.1%; n=31) reported having already used collaborative methodologies in other disciplines, however, only 12.5% (n=4) had used CS. 80.6% (n=29) of the students did not use the website proposed by the professors to create the stories and only 11.1% (n=4) had significant difficulties in carrying out the activity. In addition, 69.4% (n=25) evaluated that this methodology contributed a lot to the assimilation of the subject content. The CS comprised an approach that was well evaluated by the students and that contributed to the effective learning of the content of Dental Ethics and Legislation.
2024-12-31T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 https://portalabol.com.br/rbol/index.php/RBOL/article/view/584 DENTAL AGE ESTIMATION QUIZ: TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE 2024-10-26T13:32:38-03:00 Nikolaos Angelakopoulos nikolaos.angelakopoulos@unibe.ch Sudheer Babu Balla forensics.sudheer@gmail.com Ademir Franco franco.gat@gmail.com Rizky Merdietio Boedi rizkymerdietio@lecturer.undip.ac.id
Forensic odontology plays a vital role in criminal investigations and medico-legal cases, utilizing dental evidence to assist in the identification of individuals and the resolution of legal matters. Objective: To quantify the active specialization courses in Legal Dentistry in Brazil. Material and methods: This was a quantitative, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The population consisted of active in-person and distance specialization courses in Legal Dentistry, obtained through the e-MEC portal, from which all available information was obtained, and through institutional websites. The data was analyzed to check prevalence in relation to: modality (face-to-face or distance learning), category (private or public), region, maximum qualification of the coordinator and practices in the IML. Results: It was found that of the 41 active courses, 30 were face-to-face (73.17%); the majority in the private category (92.68%); the Southeast region had the highest concentration of courses (33.33%); a doctorate was the most prevalent degree among the coordinators (43.90%) and only 2 courses presented data regarding practices (4.87%). Conclusion: It was observed that the number of courses in Legal Dentistry is still low, which may explain the number of specialists in the area in relation to the number of dentists in Brazil. Practices are important, but few of the courses present this data. Face-to-face teaching is still more common than distance learning.
2024-12-31T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2024 https://portalabol.com.br/rbol/index.php/RBOL/article/view/596 DENTAL ADVERTISING AND THE GENERAL DATA PROTECTION LAW (LGPD): LITERATURE REVIEW AND PROPOSAL FOR IMAGE USE AUTHORIZATION TERM 2025-01-30T16:05:59-03:00 Alynne Dias Mendonça alynnediasm27@gmail.com Isabela Dias Mendonça isabelam1804@gmail.com Carla Reis Machado carlaremac@gmail.com Marcos Vinícius Coltri marcos@coltri.com.br Janaina Paiva Curi janainapcuri@hotmail.com Thiago Leite Beaini tbeaini@gmail.com
In dentistry, advertising has gained strength with the advancement of social media, and with that, dentists have found an opportunity to attract new patients with the dissemination of their work, through the publication of their clinical cases, without a concern for the aspects of ethical and legal rules governing their profession. Laws such as the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) came into force as a way to guarantee the privacy of personal data of individuals that are eventually exposed on the internet, where previously allowed by Resolution CFO 196/2019, the publication of diagnostic images and completion of treatment provided that using a Term of Free and Informed Consent (TCLE), generating a legal inconsistency about advertising in dentistry. This work aims to gather information on how the LGPD is applied in dental advertisements, debating good practices and more effective ways of carrying out professional marketing in the health area. In addition to proposing a roadmap for the elaboration of an authorization term for the use of an image compatible with the General Data Protection Law. Therefore, from the analysis of the LGPD regarding the privacy of data of individuals, it can be seen that there is a risk of the professional misusing the sensitive data of patients when exposing their images. Identity, diagnosis, planning, and others are examples of characteristics that can harm the client's image. The patient's autonomy in granting authorization is also recognized by law, with great support for the protection of the individual. In this context, the image authorization term is a necessary document that meets the legal demands, guaranteeing the exercise of the individual's autonomy. This must have the patient's identification, the purpose of using the image, and the deadline for authorization of use.
2024-12-31T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://portalabol.com.br/rbol/index.php/RBOL/article/view/592 The teaching of forensic dentistry in Brazilian universities 2024-12-14T12:29:53-03:00 Laylana Almeida de Carvalho Cavalcante laylanaaccavalcante@gmail.com Adylla Bianca Coelho Fortes laylanaaccavalcante@gmail.com
Legal Dentistry is an essential specialty in the education of dentists, equipping them to act ethically, technically, and legally. This study conducted a literature review to evaluate how Brazilian dental courses integrate this discipline into their curricula, focusing on aspects such as workload, faculty qualifications, teaching modalities (in-person or distance learning), and compliance with the Brazilian Association of Legal Dentistry (ABOL) guidelines. Findings reveal that, although most institutions offer the subject, disparities remain regarding the recommended workload and the standardization of program content. Additionally, the lack of specialized faculty poses significant challenges, potentially affecting the quality of teaching and its practical application. The integration of Legal Dentistry with related subjects, such as Ethics and Bioethics, while common, may hinder the depth required for comprehensive training. This study underscores the need for consistent educational policies and curriculum adjustments to ensure professionals are adequately prepared for forensic and legal challenges. It reinforces the importance of comprehensive training that supports ethical and technical performance by dentists in contemporary practice.
2024-12-31T00:00:00-03:00 Copyright (c) 2025 https://portalabol.com.br/rbol/index.php/RBOL/article/view/576 ASPECTOS ÉTICOS, LEGAIS E TERAPÊUTICOS DO USO DE PRODUTOS À BASE DE CANNABIS NA ODONTOLOGIA BRASILEIRA: UMA REVISÃO INTEGRATIVA 2024-12-25T11:42:03-03:00 Flavia Amorim Sampaio diandracosta@ufpa.br Fernanda Ferreira de Albuquerque Jassé ffajasse@ufpa.br Diandra Costa Arantes arantesdiandra@yahoo.com.br
Introduction: Cannabis sativa is a plant with medicinal uses, whose compounds can be extracted and used in different areas. Specific laws and rules from its respective professional council, which guarantee that professionals registered within their competence, can fulfill their activities, respecting the limits and professional ethics, support Dentistry. The perception left by the CFM Resolution 2373/2023 is to establish doubts on different work fields in a way that can hinder practical collaboration among different health professionals, which can hinder the coordination of patient care.
